Land dispute near Barrientos Center

Members of MACC are upset about possible deal

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Members of the Mexican-American community are speaking out against a possible city development deal that they believe could mar the landscape near their facility.

A developer wants to buy a city-owned lot in front of the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and build on it.

The company 70 Rainey Street LP wants to build a five-story parking lot at the corner of Rainey Street and River Street.

The area is zoned for commercial business.

The MACC’s advisory board is concerned that the structure will block the view of their building.

Board members were also surprised that the city decided to put the lot up for sale when the board had expressed interest in using the lot to alleviate their own parking issues at the center.

Austin City Council is expected to vote on whether or not they will sell the land at the next Council meeting.
