Heat wave: Stay hydrated, save energy

AUSTIN (KXAN) - As temperatures rise across Central Texas, it is important to be aware of the effects hot weather can have on you.

On Saturday, the UV Index is expected to be up to a 10. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a "10" is at the top of the very high category, and nearing the extreme category.

Temperatures in Central Texas will hover around 100 degrees most of the week. The UV Index is expected to remain in the very high to extreme categories, which means people outdoors need to take precautions.

The EPA recommends that in the very high category of UV indices, you should wear at least SPF 15 sunscreen if you must be out in the sun, and to protect yourself with your protective clothing and sunglasses.

As the highest level on the UV scale, when the UV index rises to extreme, the EPA recommends you try to either always seek shade when outdoors or to stay indoors.
