AUSTIN (KXAN) - People behind one of Austin's music festivals say it dodged a logistical bullet with the timing of Hurricane Sandy. Organizers of the Fun Fun Fun Fest are double checking all of their performers can travel in the wake of the storm. As of Wednesday, no act had canceled.
A number of this year's performers are from the East Coast. Araabmuzik is from Providence, Rhode Island. Girl Talk is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Santigold is from Philadelphia. And, there are a handful from New York, including headliner Run DMC.
Had that hurricane hit a few days later, we would've been in trouble," said event co-founder Graham Williams. "But, luckily no cancellations."
Some of the acts are actually on tour and coming from the West Coast, but "Fun Fun Fun Fest" has a backup plan if a band can't make it.
Usually there's someone out there ready to jump in and take the paycheck and get in front of a big crowd and have fun," added Williams.
Meantime, some ticket holders in the Northeast are stuck in the storm's aftermath and not able to attend. Festivals have the option of purchasing cancellation and non-appearance insurance to cover things like hurricanes, airline delays, and no show. Ticket holders are not as protected. KXAN found posts on Craigslist and Twitter of people trying to sell their Fun Fun Fun passes.
Garann Means wrote: "If my flight out of NYC is canceled I'll be selling a 3-day @funfunfunfest PIP pass for $325 (face). lmk if interested, I'll lyk when I do." According to the FAA, as of Wednesday, LaGuardia Airport in New York is still closed.
Other ticket holders are protesting the refund policy, but that is out of the festival's control. A spokesperson told us a company called Ground Control is the ticket broker. Instead of money back, they have offered four fans in the Northeast VIP 3-day passes for next year's event.
One of the ticket holders posted to Facebook: "I am working with GRD CTRL. FFF is not to blame. Thanks to every one who had our backs... and really sad I am going to miss this awesome festival."
Fun Fun Fun Fest tells us all of the bands and comedians will perform as scheduled.
The festival starts Friday and ends Sunday.
