Technology has become a part of our world so much that it could soon become part of our dining experience as more restaurants are putting mealtime decisions in the hands of their customers.
Literally.
That's what's going on at Lucky Robot Japanese Kitchen , formerly Zen, where iPads, not waiters, take orders. And that makes lunch fun, say some customers.
"I'm probably going to end up eating a little more just because it's entertaining," said Scott Miller, a regular customer. "I see pictures and read about the products."
John Lee and his friend, Doug Keating, have been regulars for a long time. But this is the first time they've used the tablet.
"I was like that looks interesting," said Lee. "I was kind of playing with it, and it's real easy to learn. It was kind of fun, too."
"I was a little freaked out. But turns out, it was as easy as surfing the net," added Keating.
Having a memorable meal is part of the idea behind the restaurant's iPad investment. Customers scan the menu, order their meals and pay their tab on one of the 30 tablets whenever they're ready.
It's a hgh-tech concept perfect for a city like Austin, said general manager Mason Evans.
"Austin is such a tech hub already and Austin is kind of open to embracing new ideas," said Evans., "It's kind of a forward-leaning city."
Evans said tablets won't replace wait staff.
"What it does is allows us to communicate in a way that's much more effective than you would typically get," Evans said.
