AUSTIN (KXAN) - Businesses are coming together to help Austin's homeless population earn an income during all the South By Southwest festivities.
Mobile Loaves & Fishes, a ReWork Project , and others have coordinated the project which helps the homeless workers sell five different Blue Bell ice cream flavors, called Street Treats, for $1 each:
The project was due to kick off Friday at 7 p.m. on the corner of 6th Street and Congress Avenue -- however plans were changed because of rainy weather. Now kick-off is set for Sunday at 6 p.m. The first 100 people to buy a Street Treat will get a free promotional T-shirt.
Street Treat vendors will be tweeting their locations via the Twitter handle of @Street_Treats so buyers will know where they are located. They also have a mobile website, which was created via the new Austin start-up YoMobi.com , which SXSW attendees can follow.
The ice cream is donated, and the working homeless will get 100 percent of the profits.
