AUSTIN (KXAN) - As people face Hurricane Isaac, oil and gas rigs that sit off the cost have already shut down production.
Right now, 58 percent of platforms and 53 percent of oil rigs in the gulf are on lockdown. That has shut down 78 percent of the Gulf's daily oil production and 48 percent of natural gas.
Just days before Labor Day weekend the shutdown could affect how much travelers spend.
AAA Texas expects 2.4 million Texans to be hitting the road and spend an average of $539.
The Lundberg Survey of fuel prices puts the average price for a gallon of regular at $3.69, about eight cents higher than the same time last year.
Nationally, a gallon of mid-grade averages $3.84 and premium $3.96.
Analyst Trilby Lundberg attributes the increase to the high cost of crude as well as the partial loss of production at a refinery in Northern California.
Tucson, Ariz., has the nation's lowest price at $3.18, while Chicago had the highest at $4.23.
