AUSTIN (KXAN) - The first athletes to cross the finish line in the Livestrong Austin Marathon were clocking five and six minute miles.
The winner of the full marathon was Omar Martinez, 27, from Mexico. He ran 26.2 miles in just two hours and thirty-five minutes. Martinez trains in Boulder, Colorado and is part of the same team as the men's half marathon winner.
"We represented the team pretty well," said Martinez, "I'm happy about that."
Austinite Mariko Neveu is the first woman to cross the finish line, her unofficial finish time was 2:55:04. This is also Martinez's first marathon win.
"To come in and to have the crowds cheering for you and to finish first, it's pretty overwhelming," said Nevee, "And it's kind of amazing! So, I probably wouldn't change any of that for the world."
The Livestrong Austin Marathon brought a variety of people to Austin but Austinites also flooded downtown streets to cross the finish line. And while paramedics were on hand to keep the runners safe, one emergency medical services paramedic, 42-year-old Steven Ward, was a participant.
Ward ran the marathon Sunday in uniform , carrying his radio and duty bag to honor of his former training captain Randy Trinkle.
A wreck on 290 East, near the city limits of Fredericksburg, claimed Trinkle’s life on December 1, 2012.
Trinkle was heading home to Fredericksburg, after working an overnight shift as an EMS, when he crashed into another car near a construction site. He had served the department for 15-years.
Ward was featured in the December issue of Runner’s World magazine. He has been carrying his duty gear during training for the past six-weeks. The paramedic’s friends also followed him along the race route to help him keep pace.
Here is a running list of winners and times:
Men's full marathon - Omar Martinez (2:35:09))
Women's half marathon - Melissa White (1:15:25)
Men's half marathon - Lee Troop (1:06:46)
5K Winner - Joseph Niland (16:47)
