An elderly woman died in a four-unit apartment complex fire in North Austin on Friday afternoon.

The fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

According to the Austin Fire Department, crews arrived within minutes to find the building engulfed in flames.

"Upon our arrival, we were aware there could be a victim in the building. Crews made an aggressive search in the fire to locate that victim," AFD Battalion Chief Thayer Smith said. "She was pronounced dead at the scene."

One additional victim was treated and released at the scene by EMS.

The call to the complex at 11802 Alpheus Ave. came around 2:15 p.m. Heavy flames could be seen shooting through the building's roof.

The worst damaged unit was located upstairs, but the entire building suffered some damage. Eight residents have been displaced by the fire, which caused $200,000 worth of damage.
