AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin-based company has come up with a unique way to give back.

On Wednesday, Whaleshark Media challenged two Austin police officers to a three-minute shopping spree at a south Austin Costco.

The officers were given three minutes to spend up to $15,000.

The gathered gifts will all go toward an Operation Blue Santa silent auction. Everything raised at the auction will help supply gifts for needy kids in the community.

Whaleshark Media is an online coupon company. The company's CEO, Cotter Cunningham, came up with the unique way to give back.

"We believe very much that we are a member of the Austin community. Austin is important to us and we wanted to give back and help if we could," said Cunningham. "This seemed like a great way to do it."

The company even gave one of their employees the opportunity to participate in the challenge.

After the race, the APD officers rang in at just over $12,000. Whaleshark Media has decided to donate the remaining $3,000 in cash to Blue Santa.

The Whaleshark Media employee who participated cashed in with over $17,000 worth of items donated to the charity.
