AUSTIN (KXAN) - A father and his 13-year-old son were killed Tuesday evening in a motorcycle accident on a neighborhood street,

Police said that neither was wearing a helmet.

The wreck occurred before 6 p.m. in the 1100 block of Berger Street, which is between Airport Boulevard and U.S. 183 in East Austin.

Police said the wreck happened when the motorcycle hit a parked vehicle on the residential street.

On scene Officer Doug Dukes said, "This is a very sad day not only for the family but to start off this year after a record year for fatalities last year starting this one off so quickly."

The victims of the crash were not immediately identified. They were the first and second people to die as a result of a traffic accident in Austin in 2013.

Initial reports indicated the boy was 7, but police overnight confirmed that he was 13.
