AUSTIN (KXAN) - A driver is dead after a car crash on Manchaca Road near William Cannon Drive on Saturday evening, Oct. 13.

According to Austin police, the driver of a maroon BMW 315 was heading northbound in the 7800 block of Manchaca Road, and for unknown reasons, lost control of the vehicle, crossing over into oncoming southbound traffic. The BMW was struck by a white Subaru four-door, which was southbound on Manchaca Road in the right lane of traffic.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. The driver of the BMW, identified as Zachary Theodore Mitchell, 19, was pronounced dead on the scene. The incident happened eight days before his 20th birthday.

The driver of the Subaru and the passenger in the car with Mitchell were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge. Police said Monday that the BMW passenger had life-threatening injuries.

This is the 60th traffic fatality of 2012. Last year at this time there were 44 traffic fatalities.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at 512-974-5560.
