AUSTIN (KXAN) - The family of a 38-year-old man who was hit and killed while on a jog is thanking police for their help in the investigation as well as the community, family and friends for their "generosity and love" during this difficult time.

Mark Gobble's sister, Dee Dee Fenwick, thanked investigators for their "help and cooperation" in nabbing the 20-year-old suspect in the death, Roman Jesus Turullos-Gonzalez.

In addition Fenwick said she was "overwhelmed with the generosity and love" from the community, friends and family.

Family statement

"My name is Dee Dee Fenwick and I am the sister of Mark Gobble. Our family, including Mark's wife Leslie, would like to to take this opportunity to thank the Austin Police Department for their help and cooperation in finding and apprehending the hit and run driver.

"We are overwhelmed with the generosity and love of the community, friends and family.

"At this time, our family has no further comment and we would appreciate your respecting our privacy as we prepare for Mark's funeral. Thank you.

Thank you,
Dee Dee Fenwick"

Turullos-Gonzalez turned himself in to police in connection with the Sunday hit-and-run death.

Police had been asking the public for help in finding him and had a warrant issued for his arrest.

While Turullos-Gonzalez turned himself in Tuesday night, he was already out on bond by Wednesday morning.

Turullos-Gonzalez is charged with third-degree felony of failure to stop and render aid.

Gobble was out jogging early Sunday when he was hit by a car. Gobble was a former administrator and instructor at Texas School for the Deaf, and he himself was deaf.

Gobble died later at University Medical Center Brackenridge.

Turullos-Gonzalez allegedly drove away from the 6300 block of West Slaughter Lane and abandoned his Toyota Tacoma a few blocks away, where police found it.

Austin police said the investigation showed Turullos-Gonzalez left the south side of the roadway and crossed into the westbound lanes -- where he allegedly hit Gobble.

Gobble's death is the 36th traffic death of the year -- the seventh hit-and-run death. At this time in 2011, there were 24 traffic deaths.

Services for Gobble are scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mercury Hall, 615 Cardinal Lane . Arrangements are being handled by Weed-Corley-Fish North , 3125 N. Lamar Blvd.

Suspect's criminal history

Turullos-Gonzalez has had some run-ins with the law, including misdemeanor possession of marijuana and felony possesion charges from 2010.

The Travis County district clerk said police had been brought in Turullos-Gonzalez several times to make sure he was fulfilling the terms of his probation and that he was in the drug-diversion court program , called SHORT.

Pedestrian deaths in Austin

Pedestrian crashes have been on the rise. They rose sharply in 2011 citywide.

Some 17 people were killed in auto-pedestrian crashes in Austin in 2011, up from 10 deaths in 2010.

APD has documented 128 intersections citywide that are dangerous for pedestrians -- those with 3 or more accidents since 2008.

Police are being reassigned to the city's most dangerous areas for pedestrians. A new strategy focuses on groups of officers saturating areas where there have been a large number of auto-pedestrian crashes.

Last pedestrian crash

A crash killed a pedestrian in Central Austin early on May 15 after he was kneeling in the street.

It happened just after 2:30 a.m. on Guadalupe Street near 39th Street. Police shut down Guadalupe during the investigation. The victim was found on the ground in the northbound lanes, in front of a Natural Grocers food store.

Austin Police Department Watch Command said a taxi driver saw the accident and called 911. The taxi driver gave police the license plate number of the SUV that hit the man.

APD found the driver, who didn't initially stop at the scene, a few blocks away. He was arrested, and charges for failure to stop and render aid are pending.
