AUSTIN (KXAN) - East Austin got an unexpected preview of Formula One racing in advance of Friday's first practice run.
F1 teamed up with Ferrari of Austin and Shell gasoline to take over the Shell station at Montopolis and Highway 71 Wednesday afternoon.
Ferrari F1 team driver Fernando Alonso was the star of the event, taking a moment to pump Shell gas into one of the new Ferraris on display, and also talk with fans. Alonso is currently ranked second on the F1 race circuit.
Alonso says that Austin is greener and colder than he expected, and that he is excited about racing on what he calls one of the best tracks in the world.
