AUSTIN (KXAN) - When Austin hosts the Formula One United States Grand Prix Sunday, it will be the latest chapter in the history of an exciting, if not dangerous sport.

While Formula One racing has existed in the United States off and on for years, it never garnered as much American attention as other racing sports like NASCAR.

But in a new film set to premiere in Austin, moviegoers will have the chance to go back to F1's deadliest period.

"1" is a documentary that features legends from the sport including Mario Andretti, Michael Schumacher, and Lewis Hamilton as it traces Formula One's history through the years.

The film gives a realistic look at the sport with the drivers talking about the fear and dangers of the race.

In one segment, driver Jackie Ickx talks about the excruciating pain of being burned in a car fire.

"You can be broken, you can have all sort of things, but being burned, it is terrible," said Ickx in the film. "I never thought it could happen to me."

Other drivers agreed, never guessing they would have to be rescued from a burned and wrecked car.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Paul Crowder directed "1." He has also directed documentaries about The Who and the New York Cosmos soccer team featuring Brazilian superstar Pelé.

"1" will premiere at the Paramount Theater , 713 Congress Ave., on Thursday. The red carpet arrival begins at 7 p.m., with the film starting at 7:30 p.m.
