TAYLOR, Texas (KXAN) - On Monday, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas opened its doors to the public.
ERCOT offered tours of its primary control center in Taylor to show exactly what it takes to control the ebb and flow of electricity in a power grid that supplies 23 million Texans.
ERCOT was also promoting a free smartphone app the organization developed to help customers conserve energy.
“[The app] allows you to receive conservation messages at any time that ERCOT is pushing for conservation," said Craig Dillon, senior retail account manager at ERCOT. "It’s been extremely beneficial during peak usage times to be able to get the message out to the public to increase conservation.”
More than 11,000 people have downloaded the app since its launch this summer. ERCOT gives the app credit for helping to maintain its zero-outage record even through the hot summer months.
