Manor thief targeting elderly

MANOR, Texas (KXAN) - A burglar in Manor is targeting the elderly, and police are trying to get the word out about the attacker.

The suspect is described as a black woman, approximately 5-foot 6, with a thin build and short hair.  Police say she's hit two homes in Old Manor, a neighborhood surrounding the town square.  One victim was a woman in her 80s.  The other in her 90s.  Both lived alone.

James Sulcer lives in Manor Town Senior Living Center, and says he has his neighbors on high alert.

"We're a close-knit community," said Sulcer.  "And, if we're aware of something going on, we contact each other."

The attacks happened Saturday evening, and Tuesday during the day.  Sulcer says the female suspect disguises herself as a helpless person around the holidays.

"She presents herself as needing charity for the Christmas season," he said.  "Then the older people feel sympathy and open their arms to them.  Once they gain entrance, then we have a situation."

One victim was pushed to the ground, and had physical injuries.  That increases the charge to aggravated robbery.

"Resistance is a problem," added Sulcer.  "But, the biggest thing is to scream."

Manor police patrol the area regularly, but word also spread at community centers and on social media.  Jose Lopez has lived in Manor 14 years.  He got a call from the Manor Police Department warning about the incidents.

"Keep an eye out for everyone in your family," said Lopez.  "It's scary at the same time, because you never know when it could happen to you."

Manor police used "Code Red" alerts and sent text messages to their subscribers, but most elderly people don't use mobile technology.  So, word of mouth is the best way to communicate the caution.

Manor police had not made an arrest as of Wednesday evening.  But, they do have a person of interest and say their case is strong.
