AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Police Department named Stephen Gilbert, 31, as the driver of the Nissan Sentra that struck a bicyclist on Saturday just after midnight. The crash happened in the 7200 of East Riverside Drive.

The cyclist, Cody Johnson, 28, was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge in critical condition, where he later died.

Gilbert was charged with driving while intoxicated, according to APD. He was booked and released on bond. He stayed on the scene after his car struck Johnson's bike, police said.

Friends of Johnson said he was well known in the Austin cyclist community and worked at a local bike shop. They also said that over the weekend family chose to take Johnson off of life support.

One of the cycling groups Johnson rode with, Queer Ride, will remember him at the end of their regular ride on Wednesday. They leave from the Long Center around 7:30 p.m. Afterwards there will be a slide show and remembrances.

Johnson's death is the 67th traffic fatality of the year. At this time last year, there were 46 traffic fatalities.
