Car hits pole; passenger ejected, dies

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A passenger in a car that ran into pole on Wednesday night died at the scene from his injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle.

Austin police said the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of Goodwin Avenue, near Tillery .

Police said the 19-year-old female driver was traveling westbound on Goodwin Avenue at a high rate of speed when she struck a pole and flipped the car. Police said the couple was having a disturbance inside the car when the crash happened.

Officials released the passenger's name on Thursday. He is Detrion Lamont Thompson, 21. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt.

One witness told KXAN News the female driver was able to walk away from the rubble.

Austin Police Department said she was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge and treated for minor injuries.

This is Austin’s 43rd traffic fatality of 2012. At this time in 2011, there were 34 traffic fatalities.
