PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) - The man shot last week during a scuffle with a Texas Ranger is charged with resisting arrest and taking a firearm from an peace officer.
Thomas Edward Byars, 44, was shot when the ranger was attempting to serve him with an arrest warrant at a Pflugerville home on Friday, the Texas Department of Public safety said.
The warrant issued in Austin carried a forgery charge, but Byars is also a suspect in another Ranger investigation in a different part of the state, DPS said.
According to DPS, the Ranger was serving a warrant in the 1200 block of Orchard Park Circle just before 4 p.m. on Friday.
DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said Byars put up a fight and then tried to take the Ranger’s gun during a scuffle. The Ranger fired the gun in self-defense, according to DPS, and hit the suspect.
Byars is expected to recover. The Texas Ranger had minor injuries from the scuffle.
