AUSTIN (KXAN) - As Downtown Austin continues its growth spurt, the Austin Police Department is making sure the area is getting the attention it needs.

To ensure that happens, the Downtown area will get its own commander.

Currently, one commander watches over Region 1, which is made up of three different sectors: Downtown (George sector), central (Baker), and north central (Ida).

"One of the challenges in the Downtown area have become very unique and somewhat time consuming for the commander," said Assistant Chief Raul Munguia. "Splitting off George sector to have it's own Commander. That way, that Commander can focus on the Downtown area."

Newly released stats from the department show violent crimes have increased in the Downtown area by three percent in the past year.

The commander that will man the Baker and Ida sectors has been in the position for a couple of years now.
