AUSTIN (KXAN) - Canine instinct saved the day at a South Austin home that caught fire early Tuesday morning.

The fire started at about 3 a.m. at a home in the 3700 block of Kandy Drive, near Brodie Lane and Convict Hill Road.

The two men inside the house say their dogs, Clair and O'Malley, alerted them to the smell of smoke.

Fire department officials said the fire started after an electrical failure in a workshop behind the home before it then spread to the back of the house. The owner says they kept propane tanks and mosquito traps in the workshop that may have fueled the fire.

No one was hurt, and neighbors helped the two men stay warm with coats and blankets as firefighters put out the last of the flames.

The fire caused $200,000 worth of damage.
