AUSTIN (AP) - Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst says the Legislature should hold hearings to look into efforts to oust embattled University of Texas President Bill Powers.
Powers has been fighting off political criticism of his leadership and is believed to have a slim majority of support among University of Texas System regents.
In emotional remarks Monday, Dewhurst said some regents have engaged in unfair attacks on Powers' character and are trying to micromanage the flagship campus in Austin.
Dewhurst provided no details Tuesday on when the hearings should start. Lawmakers could explore the regents' power and direct authority over university presidents.
The regents are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate.
The Legislature has passed resolutions supporting Powers, who has been president since 2006.
