AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police have released new information about a Friday police chase that ended in a fatal crash on West Ben White Boulevard in South Austin.

According to the police affidavit, officers responded to the Barton Creek Square Mall around 3:20 p.m. after someone called in to report that a Hispanic man wearing a suit broke into a silver Ford F-250 truck. Suspect Reynaldo Victor Hernandez Jr. was followed by a white Lincoln Navigator, and the two vehicles headed eastbound on Loop 360 toward MoPac.

Officers then chased the suspect vehicles south on Loop 360 reaching speeds of 96 miles per hour.

Hernandez allegedly took the South Lamar Boulevard exit on Loop 360, driving the Ford onto the raised concrete median to run a red light. He turned eastbound on the West Ben White Boulevard service road.

Officers witnessed Hernandez running the red light eastbound on Ben White at Pack Saddle Pass, where the Ford struck a Mitsubishi Lancer.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, identified as James David Williford, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Hernandez took off into a Dollar General store, attempting to take off his purple dress shirt at the back of the store.

After being yelled at to stop by an Austin police officer, Hernandez ran out of an emergency exit at the back of the store. He ran across a field, jumped a chain link fence and ran between two houses.

He was taken into custody in a residential area of Pack Saddle Pass.

Hernandez is being charged with murder.
