Prescription drug diversion leading to more crimes

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A major pharmaceutical company is helping train Travis County deputies and other area law enforcement officials about diverted prescription drugs.

Diverted drugs are pills and medications are taken by someone who did not have a prescription.

Deputies say that can lead to crime.

“The go into the kitchen or the medicine cabinet and they are looking to steal prescription drugs,” said Detective Mark Taub who says more burglaries over the past year were motivated by prescription drugs.

But Purdue Pharmo, the company providing the training, says 70% of diverted drugs are obtained from family and friends.

“Right out of the house, right out of the medicine cabinet,” said John Gilbride with Purdue Pharmo.

Patients can help prevent the diversion of the drugs by keep prescription drugs in a safe place and disposing of unused medication.
