AUSTIN (KXAN) - The city of Austin is moving foward on the plan to ban plastic bags in retail stores.
In the latest draft plan, single-use paper and plastic bags would be gone in March 2014. The grace period would being in March 2013, thus a year for citizens and businesses to adjust.
During that time, retailers could either charge customers 10 cents per disposable bag used, or a $1 feel for the entire transaction, whichever the store prefers.
Retailers would have to display signs advising customers of the benefits of reusing and recycling the bags.
A public meeting is set for Monday for comments about the draft plan.
