AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Austin City Council on Thursday adopted a resolution calling on Texas to support marriage between same-sex couples.
The item was part of the council's consent agenda and carries not force of law. Voters in Texas have approved an amendment to the state Constitution stating that same-sex marriages are not recognized.
Before the vote, Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole and Councilwoman Laura Morrison held a news conference attended by married partners, Jeff Lutes and Gary Stein, affirming their support for marriage equality.
The came after Austin celebrated Gay Pride Week and after a video of several gay and lesbian members Austin Police Department was released in an effort to promote tolerance and to discourage thoughts of suicide among members of the gay, lesbian and transgender community.
