AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Energy presented its recommendations for 12.5 percent rate increase to the Austin City Council Wednesday morning during a special work session.
It would be the first rate increase in 17 years, and Austin Energy said it is necessary to stay above the red.
"The bottom line is we are $75 million this year in the red coming into our budget, so we need to raise revenue to cover our cost," said Austin Energy General Manager Larry Weis, during an interview in July.
Under the rate hike plan an Austin Energy customer would pay roughly $10 more a month more to power the average-sized home in Austin. Austin Energy also plans to add about $18 extra a month for all residential customers in "fixed fees."
