AUSTIN (KXAN) - The city of Austin is working towards its goal of becoming a "zero waste" city by 2040 -- one recyclable at a time.
A new commercial recycling facility in Northeast Austin will help move Austin towards that goal.
"The city of Austin has adopted a very aggressive zero-waste plan and this is one arrow in the quiver to address that plan," said Kerry Getter, Balcones Resources CEO.
Balcones Resources built a $25 million facility that can process 25 tons of residential and commercial single-stream recyclables per hour.
Construction on the new recycling plant started in August 2011 .
Starting next month, Balcones will start processing 60 percent of the city's residential curbside recycling. The company already handles a large portion of the city's commercial recycling.
Even with the new facility, the city will continue to pick up the blue recycling bins every other week.
