AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin's own Cheapo Records will be closing after 15 years of selling records and CD's.

The store will be closing at the end of December and the closure is due to not being able to compete with discounted and free music downloads available on the internet.

The owner, Jason Shields, opened the store as an extension of the Cheapo/Applause store on St. Patrick's Day 1998. Since then, Cheapo Records has been selling CD's, DVD's and records for more than 15 years and has gone through years of all the events the live music capital is known for.

Before Cheapo finally closes, it  will be selling off itsinventory with major discounts until everything is gone.

Cheapo will also be hosting an array of performances from local and nation talent to mark the end of 15 years in business.

Shields says after the closure, he will enjoy spending time with his wife and two year old son. He says he will also enjoy sleeping in on rainy days; a past time he is not used to being that the store has flooded a few times.

Cheapo will close Christmas Eve.
