Candlelight vigil for shooting victim

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A vigil took place Friday night for the Texas State student shot to death one week earlier in the Avery Ranch subdivision in Northwest Austin.

More than 100 people gathered at the corner of Staked Plains Drive and Avery Ranch Boulevard where 23-year-old Enrique Recio died.

"It's very, very sad," said Linda Malocalaja.

Malocalaja's son attended school with Recio from elementary through college at Texas State -- although he could not be here -- she could not miss the vigil.

"He was a good student and he played football at Westwood High School. I don't know. I am so sad this could happen to such a good boy like Enrique," said Malocalaja.

Police say what happened is that Recio crashed his car in the early morning hours on Feb. 3. Fred Yazdi's wife heard something outside and told police Recio was under her car. According to court documents, Yazdi warned Recio that if he ran, he would kill him.

Recio started running away and police say Yazdi shot him three times in the chest hip and leg. He died there on the sidewalk.

"I know a lot of people like guns -- I don't, but I don't wish this to anybody," said Malocalaja.

Yazdi, 47, was charged with murder and has bonded out. Ultimately the DA will present evidence to a grand jury and ask it to decide whether use of deadly force was justified.

Malocalaja and others at the vigil have already made up their minds.

"I know homeowners want to protect their house but not like this. If somebody comes to your door and asks for help or something, please help them. Nobody will come and bang on your door -- always for something bad," said Malocalaja.

The vigil was just yards away from Yazdi's front door. Nobody appeared to be home. There were several police officers at the vigil to help keep people out of the street.
