AUSTIN (KXAN) - A suspicious van driving through downtown led Austin police to shut down Second Street briefly this morning.
According to the Austin Police Department's watch commander, a van was driving through downtown around 8 a.m. Officers stopped the van because the tailpipe was smoking. The driver then jumped out of the van and ran away from police officers.
Second Street was shut down briefly due to a potential terror threat. Eventually, police officers realized the driver had fled because the back of the van was filled with stolen tires. The fact the van was stopped alongside City Hall was simply a coincidence.
The driver is not in custody. The street was reopened with no further incident.
