AUSTIN (KXAN) - Students at Westlake High School are sporting a new piece of jewelry in honor of an old friend.
Ben Breedlove, 18, lost his battle with a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy -- or HCM -- on Christmas Day.
His final YouTube video went viral in a short time, with more than 6 million views. His story was covered on national television shows, as well.
Following his death, the Westlake Student Council contacted the HCM Association, a non-profit organization that raises awareness about heart disease. The organization created a special Ben Breedlove memorial bracelet.
Westlake students don't have to pay for them but donations will be accepted to fund research.
