Bomb threat called into ABIA

Caller said there were explosives on plane

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A bomb threat called into the Austn-Bergstrom International Airport caused a few delays for some travelers on Wednesday night.

The operator at the main telephone line at ABIA took the call around 6:30 p.m. The caller stated there was a bomb on a plane enroute to DFW Airport.

According to an ABIA spokesperson, there was already one American Airlines plane enroute to DFW Airport (Flight 1072) but there was another American Airlines flight number 872 that was at the gate waiting to leave for DFW Airport.

"[Flight 872] they are unloading the passengers and re-screening every passenger," said Jason Zeilinski, ABIA spokesperson. "They're going to look over the aircraft for any explosives."

Re-screening took about 30 minutes but flight 872 got the all clear just after 7:30 p.m.

Fight 1072 landed at DFW at 7 p.m.  Passengers deplaned the aircraft safely and gate A21's security checkpoint was closed temporarily.

Authorities at DFW Airport said the plane was towed to an isolation area of the airfield as a precaution while investigators work to resolve the issues. The aircraft was cleared and returned to the airline just after 9 p.m.

"We are taking this threat very seriously but there has not been any changes in airport security," said Zeilinski.

Last week, a man called the San Antonio International Airport saying three bombs in the parking garage were set to go off -- nothing was found. Authorities can't say if these two incidents are related at this time, but they are investigating.
