AUSTIN (KXAN) - A bicyclist who died in a Westlake Hills accident on Saturday has been identified as Verter Ginestra, 55.
Ginestra was pronounced dead at the scene near the intersection of Loop 360 and Westbank Drive. The 85-year-old driver has not yet been charged in the accident. Traffic was backed up for miles near the intersection of loop 360 and Westbank Drive in Southwest Austin.
EMS, Police, and the Department of Public Safety all responded. The driver and passengers in the Toyota Camry that struck the victim were not injured.
Nearly a dozen bicyclists have been killed so far in 2012. It is an experience Austin bikers like Daryn Harpaz says they are all too familiar with.
"I actually thought of myself and a couple close calls I've had when cars have been aggressive," said Harpaz, who bikes more than 20 miles a day along Loop 360.
The area is heavily populated with bikers, and there are several trails near the accident site. Investigators are working to determine who was at fault.
"It's hard to say at this point. It looks like the bicyclist was traveling legally. Until we can determine what happened with the automobile that struck it, we are not real sure at this point," said Stan Roper of the Travis County Sheriff's Office.
