AUSTIN (KXAN) -

On Friday afternoon, a special graduation happened at Travis High School.

For these 11 war veterans, their high school diploma has been decades in the making.

All 11 individuals were Austin Independent School District students when they had to leave school due to their service to their country

AISD has been awarding belated high school diplomas to veterans since 2002.

Even though it's been years since most of the veterans have even sat a school desk, the moment of walking across the stage to receive their diploma was not lost on them.

"I wish I would have completed high school," said Charles Davis, US Navy veteran. "I would recommend that to anybody going to service, finish your high school first, but my life turned out pretty good regardless."

AISD awards belated high school diplomas to veterans from the following wars:

  • World War II
  • Korean War
  • Vietnam War
  • Persian War
  • Iraq War
  • War in Afghanistan
  • or any other war formally declared by the United States, military engagement authorized by the United States Congress, or conflict authorized by the president of the United States under the War Powers Resolution of 1973.

Eligible veterans, or those acting on behalf of a deceased veteran, may obtain a diploma application form by contacting the Department of School, Family and Community Education at 414-0112.
