BEE CAVE, Texas (KXAN) - While Punxsutawney Phil is a big hit in Pennsylvania, we do it a bit differently here in Texas on Groundhog Day.

We have Bee Cave Bob, the armadillo that lives in Bee Cave just west of Austin.

He will be predicting the start of spring Thursday afternoon.

The Lone Star Weatherological Society said he's pretty accurate.

If he comes out of his hole, spring will come six weeks early. If he stays inside, we're in for more winter.

The group claims Bee Cave Bob is right 98.6 percent of the time.

Meanwhile, a lot of people are talking about the weather this winter, or the lack of wintry weather.

In-depth look at the numbers

  • Last winter we recorded 19 days of freezing temperatures. This year we've only had six days so far.
  • Last January's average high was 60 degrees. This January's average high was 67 degrees.
