AUSTIN (KXAN) - Just in time for the season's first freeze, Barton Springs Pool will close for repairs to a culvert and downstream dam.
Construction is now entering Phase 2, which requires the closure of the pool until the end of the project. Barring delays from construction issues or weather, the pool should reopen in March. Tuesday is the last day the pool will be open this year.
The bypass is a concrete box culvert that allows both the normal flow of Barton Creek and frequent small floods to go around the swimming area, protecting the water quality of the pool. The sidewalk on the north side of Barton Springs Pool is actually the top of the bypass culvert.
The bypass was built in the 1970s and has come to the end of its expected life. Left unrepaired, its condition will continue to deteriorate and could threaten the pool.
