Austinites celebrate first day of Chanukah

Jewish festival continues for eight days

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Jewish festival of Chanukah, translated as the Festival of Lights started Saturday.

Chanukah is celebrated on the twenty-fifth day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev.

There are several events planned in and around Austin, the first taking place on Sunday.

 

EVENTS

[Sunday, Dec. 9] Chanukah in the Hood at Central Market North with live music by Mazel Tov. Cocktail Hour from 12 – 1:30 pm, plus children and community choirs and activites from 2 – 3:30 pm. Dreidel games and entertainment. Everyone will receive chocolate Chanukah gelt and dreidels.

[Sunday, Dec. 9] Chanukah with the Yiddish Cowboys The Kosher Store at HEB from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.

[Sunday, Dec. 9] Annual Chanukah Bingo at Congregation Agudas Achim. 12:30 – 3 pm, $15 for adults, $10 for kids.

[Tuesday, Dec. 11] Menorah Lighting at the Capitol . 5:30 pm.

[Thursday, Dec. 13] Public Menorah Lighting at City Hall . 5:30 pm.
