AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin police officer responding to a home for a burglary call ended up shooting and killing the homeowner's dog on Thursday night.

Police said the officer went to the home in the 5000 block of Delores Avenue just before 4 p.m. to take a burglary report from the homeowner.

As the officer was walking around the house, police said the dog attacked him and that's when he shot the dog.

The dog was taken to the Austin Animal Center for treatment but died a short time later.

The officer had minor injuries and didn't receive any treatment. Austin police said the dog was a pitbull.

In April, the Austin Police Department came under scrutiny when an officer shot and killed a blue heeler.

Because of the Cisco incident, APD implemented a new two-hour training course for cadets. The course is supposed to help officers read a dog's body language and what options officers have when responding to calls where dangerous dogs are involved.
