AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Austin Police Department is looking for a few good men. And women. Actually more than a few.
The shorthanded APD did get help Friday night, swearing in 64 cadets.
They went through 1,300 hours of training over the course of 32 weeks.
Chief Art Acevedo is happy for the reinforcements, "This helps keep up with attrition. The city is growing and with the new hotels we'll be stealing more conventions. We're short, we know that and hopefully will get some help in the next budget."
The force currently consists of 2,300 personnel and 1,600 officers, which is below the national average of having 2.4 officers for per thousand residents.
A study earlier this year concluded APD needs 257 new officers to be added by 2017, when Austin's population is expected to be close to one million people.
This group of cadets was the 122nd class for Austin police. There will be two more in 2013, starting training in January and April.
