AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin man is dead after suffering a heart attack Sunday in a San Francisco triathlon.

In a statement issued by “Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon,” Race Director Bill Burke parlayed his condolences about the tragedy.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon team are with the family and friends of the racer as they mourn this loss,” Burke said.

Race organizers for the Triathlon believe the 46-year-old man died after suffering a heart attack in the 1.5 mile swimming portion of the triathlon.

“It is with great sadness that we must report a 46 year old man from Austin, Texas, passed away during the swim portion of the 33rd Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon which took place this morning, Sunday, March 3, 2013, starting at approximately 7:30 a.m. “

Burke said the water safety team noticed the man immediately and tried to revive him unsuccessfully on land.

“It is our understanding, that this is the first death to ever to take place at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, which has taken place for 33 years,” Burke said.

The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon includes a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shores of the St. Francis Yacht Club, an 18-mile bike ride, and an 8-mile run through San Francisco's Golden Gate Recreational Area.
