Austin Energy offers rebates for 2-wheel electric vehicles

E-bikes, Segways could ease congestion

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Energy is hitting the road.

The city-owned electric company said Tuesday that it is offering rebates of up to $300 to residents who buy two-wheel electric vehicles for use in their daily commute.

Austin Energy is making the rebates a regular part of its energy-saving offers and has expanded the incentives to include electric bikes, scooters, mopeds, motorcycles and Segways, the utility said.

"The common trait for all these two-wheel vehicles is that they are all propelled with an electric motor," Austin Energy said in a news release.

Some of the vehicles, like electric bicycles, use human and electric power. Others, like the motorcycle, use 100 percent electric power and don't need to be pedaled.

AE's incentives will vary depending on the price of the vehicle and the mileage range per charge.

"Choosing electricity as a transportation fuel lowers the amount of pollutants into the air by 98 percent compared to gas-powered automobiles," AE said. "Two-wheel electric vehicles also provide a convenient option for driving at a large work campus, parks, universities and downtown commutes. The vehicles also decrease maintenance costs associated with automobiles."

Purchases must be made through an Austin Energy-approved dealership. Here's the list:
