AUSTIN (KXAN) - On music's biggest night, a musician who calls Austin her part-time home came out on top.

Esperanza Spalding won in two of the three categories she was nominated in.

She won best jazz vocal album for Radio Music Society and best  instrumental arrangement and accompanying vocalist for her work with Thara Memory.

She did not win for best long-form music video.

Before the awards, KXAN spoke with Martin Coulter from Waterloo Records about the nominees. He said Spalding shined out even when she was starting out.

"It was amazing how talented she was," said Coulter. He thought at the time, "Wow she really's got a future. She's not only a fantastic jazz bass player, she has a good stage presence."

This isn't Spalding's first big award. In 2011, Spalding won the Grammy for best new artist.

Several other Austin-connected musicians were nominated this year.

Ruthie Foster lost out in the best blues album for Let It Burn.

Several Central Texas musicians collaborated on This One's For Him: A Tribute To Guy Clark. The album dedicated to the West Texas singer lost in the best folk album category.
