Austin Animals racing for a home

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The city of Austin will soon be overcrowded due to the increased traffic to the city for the Formula One races.

The traffic will soon subside but overpopulation will still be a problem in Austin's animal shelters. With the Austin Animal Shelter facing a deficit of more than 40 kennels, the shelter has announced it will be waiving all adoption fees from Nov. 16-18.

“Thousands of people will be anxiously waiting to see who takes the checkered flag this weekend,” said Abigail Smith, chief Animal Services Officer.  “Many of the animals at our shelter have been patiently waiting for their trophy, a new and loving home, for months.  We urge people to take the true top prize home this weekend by adopting a new companion animal from the Austin Animal Center.”

Adoption fees are also being waived at the Town Lake Animal Center located at 1156 W.Cesar Chavez St., along with the Sunset Valley Petsmart located at 5207 Brodie Lane, and the Lakeline Petco located at 14010 N-183.

All animals adopted from every center mentioned will be spayed or neutered. The animals will also be vaccinated and go home with a collar, tag, or microchip. These services valued at more than $200 are included to help pets stay healthy and safe.
