AUSTIN (KXAN) - Been to east Austin lately? Every week it seems you see new homes, condos and businesses going up.

More is coming.

A group of developers called thinkEAST presented their plan to The City Council this week with favorable reviews.

The proposal would develop an artistic colony on 24 acres, east of Airport Road and north of East Seventh Street.

"The developers expect everything from technology to film to music to visual arts," said Robert Nash, a spokesman for thinkEAST. "A full range of creative activities will be represented."

Austin's arts community generates nearly $4.5 billion a year, up by one-third from five years ago. It provides $71 million in annual city taxes and 49,000 jobs.

"The creative factor in Austin is huge and that's what thinkEAST is embracing," Nash said. "There's a lot of energy in east Austin and this tract is a very unique and beautiful piece of land."

Of the 24 acres, eight would be designated for affordable housing. There are also plans for a community center, trails and gardens.
