AUSTIN (KXAN) - A man allegedly wearing a gas mask and carrying a dummy gun near The University of Texas campus was taken in for questioning by UT police, officials said.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. when someone notified authorities of what appeared to be an armed man on the campus that was rocked more than two years ago when a gunman terrified the campus firing several shots before killing himself in a library.

The man in Friday's incident first was seen near 24th and Guadalupe streets.

UTPD said they located the man at 4:11 p.m. and secured the weapon. His name was not immediately released.

Police stopped the man near Clark Field east of Waller Creek between Martin Luther King Boulevard and 21st Street. They said he was carrying what they described as a training gun, which does not fire.

He was described as:

  • wearing gas mask
  • wearing no shirt
  • wearing an Army-green backpack and blue camouflage shorts
