AUSTIN (KXAN) - This year in Austin, there have been 18 deadly accidents tied to alcohol. That's a 155 percent increase over last year.
That's why the Austin Police Department will crack down this holiday weekend with "No Refusal."
Cmdr. Jason Dusterhoft of Austin Police Department said they will do what ever it takes to change the amount of drunk drivers on the road.
"What does 'no refusal' mean? That means if you get pulled over and we believe you're intoxicated, we're going to take you to jail, skip the line and take your blood if you refuse a breath test," Dusterhoft said.
"If we have to go make another 90 or 100 arrests, then that's exactly what were going to do, " Dusterhoft added.
Starting Friday night, Austin Police will patrol the streets looking for drunk or even buzzed drivers.
"We're not going to stand for it and if we have to ruin you weekend we will," Dusterhoft said.
This Labor Day Weekend, the department is taking a stronger approach with 24-hour patrols.
Drivers will not have a choice if they get pulled over.
Many headaches can come from a DWI, not just the hangover. A driving-while-intoxicated charge could cost a driver in the ballpark of $17,000 or more with fines, insurance and lawyers.
A new law now doubles the amount of jail time and fines for those with blood alcohol levels .15 or higher.
