APD surveys storm aftermath from air

AUSTIN (KXAN) - On a helicopter ride over Austin not long after the rain moved out, an Austin Police Department air crew was able to see the benefits of the storm.

"There is water in place we haven't seen in a while," said Cpl. Wuthipong Tantaksinanukij. "Some of the places that the citizens of the community like to go out --  like Campbells Hole -- it's been empty for quite a long time."

But the water is rising in that popular recreation spot and in many others. The view from the air showed Barton Springs Pool swelled out of its banks and water flowing over the sidewalks. The city closed the pool early Tuesday because of the flooding and debris.

The air survey also showed the water rising in Lake Travis, up four feet from the recent rain and it could rise another three feet. The so-called "Sometimes Islands" are still visible and the lake is still well below normal levels.

Water flowed very quickly in Barton Creek through the Greenbelt area and in Onion Creek.

Some kayakers tried to take advantage of the fast-moving water. One man flipped trying to get through some rapids, but quickly recovered.

"It's still pretty dangerous because of all the debris and things that are in the water so we just ask people to be really careful about that if they choose to do those activities," said Tantaksinanukij.

For the first time in more than a year, the Pedernales River is flowing, as well. It has been bone dry, but Tuesday, the water was rushing in the river banks.

"Almost a year since we've seen any water in some of those waterways,  so it was actually really nice to see the water flowing again through the city," said Tantaksinanukij.

Unlike some other local agencies, APD did not have any calls for water rescues Tuesday. Air crews were checking on low water crossings, as well.
