APD honors fallen Officer Jaime Padron

AUSTIN (KXAN) - On Sunday, in the wake of a tragedy, officers in Austin remembered one of their own.

The Austin Police Department held a golf tournament in honor of Officer Jaime Padron to raise enough money to send his family and friends to Washington D.C.

Padron was killed in the line of duty back in April, shot in the neck by a man when he responded to a disturbance call at a Walmart. Now his family and colleagues would like to honor him on the national level with his name inscribed on the National Memorial Wall.

It's the highest honor for fallen officers across the country. The Austin Police Association, along with Cops 4 Charities, organized Sunday's golf benefit held at the Terra Vista Golf Club in Round Rock.

All proceeds from the tournament will assist sending Padron's family and close co-workers to Washington D.C. for the ceremony.

While there, his family will get the opportunity to meet Pres. Barack Obama and tour Congress.

Dozens of golfers that didn't know Officer Padron showed their support in the tournament as well.
For those that did know him they say golfing and raising money for a good cause were two of his favorite things.

"He used to like to do it on his own, he would call me up and say hey lets golf lets go do this," said Officer Henry Aguilar, a co-worker and friend of Padron. "He lived here in Terra Vista this is the golf course where he frequented a lot so we figured how else better to honor him than to come out to the place where he golfed and lived."

The Austin Police Association also held a dinner at the golf club to help raise funds after the golf tournament. 

"It's about one thing and that's family and honoring a great man in Jaime Padron," said Chief Art Acevedo.
