AUSTIN (KXAN) - During the holidays, as many people stock up their cars and living rooms with gifts, thieves are doing a little Christmas shopping of their own.

Austin Police Department said it never fails, they always see a spike in burglaries during this time of year.

Stores are jam-packed with cars during the Christmas season and some shoppers have a tendency to make multiple trips into the mall leaving expensive purchases in their car for all to see.

APD is doing its part to protect shoppers-- targeting thieves with bait cars.

The department is pushing the program full throttle during the season, placing a variety of bait cars around town.

Data and statistics were taken from arrests during the holiday season last year to improve this year's success.

"Alterations to locations, time of day,  we're always on the move not giving the bad guys a chance to our routine, " said detective David Wright.

But thieves aren't just after your gifts: APD said popular vehicles stolen in Austin are GMC and Ford Pickups, along with Honda Accords and Civics topping the list.

Last year, 235 cars were stolen between Thanksgiving and New Years Day, and another 1,500 cars were broken into.

"It almost takes them as long as for someone to take their key out of their pocket and stick the key into the door lock, " said Wright.

You'll also want to double check the locks at your house, home burglaries also see a spike this time of year.

APD suggest shoppers wait to put any gifts out under the tree until it's time for Santa Claus to visit.

A few friendly reminders that will keep the Grinch from stealing your holiday joy.
